Architecture is the organization of such experiences into spatial 'figures' which match the operational and ritual patterns of a building, so that we may say that the architectural order of a building will lie in the vital proportioning and sequential relationship of such figures. The 'figures' can be understood in terms of degrees of enclosure from agoraphobia to claustrophobia and I present a number of instances from my own work as illustration. There is the totally enclosed room; the room without a ceiling or with a glazed ceiling, the room with a wall or walls removed, (the portico or loggia) and the threshold, a place of pause looking two ways between outer and inner. <wrap hi>Form harmonizes the contradiction</wrap>: it is the setting for the evocative ambiguities, for the associative collusion, of imagery.
